The Maintenance & Construction Scheduling Team supports Electric and Gas Distribution Operations by planning and scheduling field employees with maintenance and construction work. The team receives designs and work requests from multiple departments, which may include customer requested work, compliance / regulatory work, emergent work, and system reliability / integrity work. Through planning of resources, materials and associated equipment, work is organized and prioritized to create a timely and quality schedule that accomplishes operational goals such as commitments met, productivity, and first-time completion. Schedules are built using T minus work management philosophy and communicated to all necessary stakeholders (field employees, planners, designers, etc.).

Job Description / Responsibilities

This position is a Hybrid Scheduler (Resource and Work Scheduler position) for the assigned Gas headquarters supporting Jackson, Royal Oak and Saginaw s workforce management either in an office setting or remotely.

The Hybrid Scheduler:

Uses the T minus work management philosophy to build a comprehensive schedule from T-4 to T-0 ensuring all work is construction-ready and workload is balanced with available capacity.

In order to achieve that balance, the Hybrid Scheduler:

  • Will maintain awareness of multiple headquarters and provide recommendations to management regarding travelling crews, shift equipment, work overtime, and supplementing workforce with contractors.
  • Works closely with the Long-Range Planner and uses work plan inputs (overtime, non-premise, paid absence, headcount, contractor / internal mix, and work mix) to ensure alignment between plan/schedule and financial targets.
  • Will gather data from multiple sources to perform detailed analysis and provide explanations regarding work plan adherence.
  • Will monitor, plan and coordinate gas and electric workloads using a crew composition timeline for each week of work. The timeline is modeled to achieve optimal productivity, meet commitments and deliver on operational and financial goals.
  • Coordinates materials with Supply Chain, equipment and vehicles with Fleet Services, and equipment and resources with external parties and other internal workgroups.
  • Communicates with Field Leaders, Team Leaders, fellow Schedulers, and Long-Range Planners in order to create a complete an accurate T-4 to T-0 schedule.
  • Facilitates weekly meetings with multiple stakeholders to ensure alignment and a successful handoff of the T-4 and T-0 work schedule.
  • Drive results and apply knowledge to make complex and critical decisions through interpretation of information and apply the decisions to safely allocate all resources (materials, operational employees, equipment).
  • Plan and schedule underground gas construction, maintenance and emergency work.
  • Monitor, prioritize, and assign workload according to resources, staffing, and geography, making appropriate adjustments as necessary.
  • Coordinate activities with customers, employees, departments, and outside agencies to meet customer commitments.
  • Facilitate and participate in weekly meetings between Field Leaders, and other internal departments.
  • Monitor gas leak compliance dates and schedule accordingly.
  • Respond to MPSC and Legislative complaints.
  • Ensure proper permitting with municipalities, ensure proper safety requirements with MISS DIG, and facilitate coordination between other additional agencies as necessary.


In addition to the duties outlined above, the Hybrid Scheduler will be responsible for completing the following:

  • May participate in storm operations to support timely restoration of customers and to ensure safety of the public and Consumers Energy employees. Storm support may be a requirement of the role and may include dispatching / ARCOS support / wire guard support, or any other tasks needed to support storm operations.
  • Performs other related duties as required.


Required Qualifications

  • A High School Diploma or GED.
  • 1 or more years of customer service or technical experience.
  • 2 or more years of applicable experience.
  • Must possess a valid driver s license.
  • Proficient software skills with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Follows all safety rules and procedures and contributes to the safety of co-workers and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficient CRM7 (front office) experience.
  • Proficient SAP (back office) experience.
  • Excellent communication, customer service and teamwork skills.
  • Completion of college level courses or a degree in a scientific or technical field.
  • Operations scheduling experience.
  • Project planning experience.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Ability to create and lead presentations with a meaningful agenda and clearly articulate key data and information to large groups of stakeholders.
  • Advanced organizational (time management, multi-tasking, follow-through) and problem-solving skills (5 Whys, Pareto charts, daily operating reviews) to achieve operational, financial and breakthrough goals.
  • Ability to read construction prints; recognize material (including specialty / long lead time material); understand capabilities of vehicles, equipment and tools; assess number and type of crews required to complete work; and identify field conditions that drive job-specific prerequisites (scheduled outage, forestry, traffic control, etc.); understand order types, and differentiate between capital and O&M orders.

Hours and Travel

  • This position requires the individual work 40 hours per week with 100% of time spent in the office, specific field locations or remote.
  • Employee may have to travel to support other headquarters and may have to work extended hours that are outside of normal working times and days.
  • Work a flexible schedule, which may include evenings, weekends, holidays and overtime.
  • This position requires storm support, which will involve 12-16 hour shifts and the need to travel to other locations during those events.
  • A Hybrid Scheduler may be required to maintain on-call support for work management centers.
